Should expat families pick a home in Singapore before confirming a school place?

Updated 22 October 2026

Generally no. Confirm school placement first, because a well-located home becomes inconvenient if your child's school is across the island. In our October 2026 check, some neighbourhoods were under 2 km from a ranked international school and others 4.5 km or more.

Our ranking of 10 expat family neighbourhoods puts school access first, commute second, housing fit third and lifestyle fourth. The reasoning is practical: Singapore commutes are manageable, but school runs repeat every weekday and can dominate family routines. If you sign a lease before a place is confirmed, you may be left with a long daily journey or a home that no longer fits. Distances vary widely. When we measured straight-line distances on 18 October 2026, Serangoon Gardens, Woodlands and Holland Village were each within 2 km of one of the 10 international schools in our ranking, while Robertson Quay, River Valley and Sentosa Cove were 4.5 km or more from the nearest one. Real travel distances are longer.
